GLOBAL ART: STUDIO

Sculpture is three dimensional.

Because of the additional dimension of depth, one must take into account new factors that one might not

consider when making a drawing or a painting. These include balance, a solid structure, and gravity.

One must also consider placement.

Where should it sit? On a table? In the middle of the floor? On a wall?

Sculpture can be reductive or additive. Reductive processes include stone carving or wood carving. Additive processes include clay modeling, casting or assemblage.

Sculpture in the round is free standing and can be viewed from multiple points of view. Relief sculpture is usually placed against a flat surface and is intended to be viewed from the front.

Now it is time for you to create a work of art based on your research and your exposure to the sculpture materials and techniques presented in class.

You experimented with clay, plaster gauze and construction blocks. Choose one of these materials to create a sculpture that follows the following criteria

  1. The sculpture must be either free standing or relief

  2. The sculpture cannot be functional (a pot or a plate) it must have a dynamic form that shows all three dimensions.

  3. The sculpture must be at least the size of an average shoe box.

  4. The sculpture must have personal relevance or meaning.

  5. The sculpture must show some influence from at least one of the cultures that you researched.

To Begin:

Complete the Idea and Plan part of the iwb flowchart in your workbook. Include sketches and diagrams from multiple perspectives.

Choose your materials and practice.

Begin to execute.

MAKE SURE YOU ARE DOCUMENTING EVERY STEP IN YOUR WORKBOOK. YOU SHOULD TAKE PHOTOS ALONG THE WAY AND REFLECT ON THE PROCESS IN A PROCESS JOURNAL
